Cardiovascular research

It is unquestionable that some of the most relevant diseases with high social, economic and clinical impact in developed societies are chronic and acute alterations of cardiovascular function. The most important behavioral risk factors of cardiovascular diseases are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful use of alcohol. The effects of these behaviors may show up in individuals as raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose, raised blood lipids, and overweight and obesity.

Developing new diagnostic tools, pharmacological therapies and surgical procedures to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases constitutes a major health priority and is the mission of the Cardiovascular research area of the Center for Advanced Technology of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele.

The area gathers 11 units working primarily on clinical research. Many of our top researchers work as head physicians in the clinical departments of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele and serve as professors at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele and others universities.

Among our core research interests:

  • Arithmology;
  • Cardiac valves and aortic surgery;
  • Acute and chronic myocardial damage;
  • Advanced cardiac failure and mechanical supports;
  • Coronary revascularization;
  • Vascular inflammation.
