IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine Service (ITMS) provides clinical services to support patients in need of blood component therapy, cellular therapy, therapeutic apheresis and specialized laboratory diagnostics. Working in tandem with ITMS, the Immune-hematology and transfusion medicine Unit carries out research projects addressing the improvement of clinics and diagnostic tools in the area of transfusion medicine.

Research activity

Research activities applied to clinics:

  • Blood components for non-transfusion use (application in dermatology, orthopedics, ophthalmology), with special regard for regenerative medicine.
  • Patient blood management, especially in routine and emergency surgery and trauma/intensive care.
  • Identification of blood components for specific patient categories, such as newborns and infants.
  • Cryopreservation of blood components

Research activities applied to diagnostics:

  • Collaboration with Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit research group in molecular diagnostics applied to the management of patients undergoing allogeneic SCT, especially for the detection of minimal residual disease and early relapse.
  • Collaboration with Hematology and bone Marrow Transplantation Unit research group in molecular diagnostics applied to the management of patients with hematologic malignancies. 
  • Flow-cytometry and molecular diagnostic for optimizing diagnostic and follow- up of patients with hematologic diseases: collaboration with REL (Rete Ematologica Lombarda), European Leukemia Net and several other groups.
