MD degree at the University of Torino, specialization in Internal Medicine and Hematology. Assistant, Associate and Full Professor in Torino until 2004 then in Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Responsible of Benign hematology program at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele. Vice Director, Genetics and Cell Biology Division 2014 - March 2017, now retired Professor of Medicine, Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele.

Her research interest is the molecular basis of erythrocyte and iron disorders. Her most important results were the identification of hepcidin mutations in hemochromatosis, which linked the hormone hepcidin with iron metabolism in humans and the clarification of mechanisms of hepcidin inhibition. She served as member of the Iron and Heme Committee of the American Society of Hematology (ASH,2004-2006), Committee chair (2005-2006), reappointed in 2014; councilor of the European Hematology Association (EHA) Board (2007-2011); President of the BIOIRON (IBIS) Society (2011-2013). Past member of the Editorial Boards of British Journal of Hematology and BLOOD; past Associate Editor of Haematologica. ANVUR expert for the evaluation of University and international granting agencies. She received the 2003 Marcel Simon award (BIOIRON Society), the “Beccaria Award” from Serra Foundation, Modena in 2014, the prestigious “Ham Wasserman lecture” at the ASH Meeting 2013 in New Orleans, the “EHA 2016 Jean Bernard lifetime achievement” in Copenhagen and the 2017 Ferrata lecture of the Italian Society of Hematology, Rome.
