After having earned an M.D. at the University of Milan, Dr. Sitia (GS), in 2001 joined the laboratory of Prof. L.G. Guidotti and Prof. F. Chisari at TSRI in La Jolla, USA, as a post doctoral fellow publishing two first-authored papers (PNAS, 2002 and JCI, 2004) utilizing the mouse model of acute HBV infection. After moving back to IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, he collaborated with different groups, Prof. M. Bianchi, first and corresponding author J LeukocBiol, 2007 and Prof. Guidotti first and corresponding author, PLoSPathog, 2011. Furthermore, after being trained in the laboratory of Prof. Nakamoto, Kanazawa, Japan, in early 2008, GS was able to set up at SRSI the immune mediated mouse model of chronic HBV (first and corresponding author, PNAS 2012). During those years, GS has also successfully collaborated with Prof. Naldini defining the efficacy of targeted Tie2-IFNα strategy in mouse models of cancer (Cancer Cell, 2008). Based on those studies, GS was able to receive his first independent funds that allowed him to initiate a program aiming at utilizing the Tie2-IFNα strategy for liver colorectal cancer metastases, published in EMBO Mol Med (last and corresponding author, 2016) that opened up the road to define new strategies to prevent hepatic CRC cell colonization by selective targeting of liver cells by cytokines such as type I IFNs. GS has authored more than 40 papers and serves as member of the editorial board of ecancermedicalscience and Plos One.
