Group leader, Immuno-biotherapy of melanoma and solid tumors Unit
Vincenzo Russo has been trained in tumor immunology and immunotherapy at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan (1993-2007) and in tumor immunology at the Instituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri (1996-97).
Major achievements:
- Characterization of the mechanisms of tumor antigen presentation by human DCs based on the phagocytosis of UV-irradiated xenogenic cells over-expressing human tumor antigens (Russo et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 5:2185-90, 2000), and on the cross-dressing of intact HLA-peptide complexes (Russo et al. Blood. 95:3473-7, 2000).
- Pre-clinical characterization of the mechanisms responsible for the generation of antitumor T cells after the administration of genetically modified lymphocytes (Traversari et al. Blood. 109:4708-15, 2007; Russo et al. J Clin Invest. 117:3087-96, 2007), and their clinical exploitation in melanoma patients (Fontana et al. Blood. 113:1651-60, 2009; Russo et al. Int J Cancer. 132:2557-66, 2013).
- Identification and characterization of the role of Liver X Receptor/(LXR) ligands axis in dampening antitumor immune responses (Villablanca et al. Nat Med. 16:98-105, 2010; Raccosta et al. J Exp Med. 210:1711-28, 2013; Soncini, Corna et al. PNAS. 113(41): E6219-E6227, 2016; Fontana et al. OncoImmunology 8(3):1554967, 2019).
