Marika Falcone graduated summa cum laude and honors in Medicine and Surgery and obtained a PhD in Neurosciences at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. Between January 1994 and June 1996 she worked as visiting student in the research group of Prof. Barry Bloom at the Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY preparing her PhD thesis on the role of cytokines in preclinical models of multiple sclerosis (Falcone M, J Exp Med 1997). In June 1996 she moved to the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA to work as Research Associate in the laboratory of Prof Nora Sarvetnick where she investigated the role of iNKT cells in the autoimmune pathogenesis of Type 1 Diabetes (Falcone M et al J Exp Med 1999). Since 2001 she works in the Division of Immunology, Transplantation and Infectious Diseases of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele as a Research Associate and then as a Group Leader. 

Dr Falcone received research funds from several national and international funding agencies including the European Commission, the International Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (USA), the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (USA), the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes, the Italian Ministry of Health, and the Italian Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis. She published her work on important peer-reviewed journals such as Science Advances, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Diabetes, EBioMedicine, Immunity, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Gastroenterology.
