Andrea Cabibbe has more than 10 years of experience in translational research in the field of tuberculosis (TB), development and evaluation of novel rapid diagnostic assays, and genomic surveillance and diagnosis of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB). He is author of more than 60 scientific publications. In Italy, he gained his master’s degree in Biology Applied to the Biomedical Research (2011), a PhD in Medical Biotechnology (2016) and a 2nd level vocational master in Global Health (2022). He is core group member of the Global Laboratory Initiative core group of the Stop TB Partnership and Associate Editor for The International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
Andrea is the key responsible person of the WHO Collaborating Centre in Tuberculosis Laboratory Strengthening (ITA-98) and Tuberculosis Supranational Reference Laboratory Milan hosted by FCSR: he manages collaborative studies with Low- and Middle-Income Countries at high burden of TB disease and international agencies; he delivers international training courses on developing laboratory knowledge and skills; he conducted approximately 30 short-term field technical assistance visits in the African, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, European, South-East Asian, and Western Pacific Regions; he supports the development of WHO recommendations and technical documents for the care and management of TB. Specific lines of research: characterization of molecular mechanisms associated with resistance to anti-TB drugs used in new generation treatment regimens; development and evaluation of novel diagnostic assays or approaches; the use of next generation sequencing for the diagnosis and surveillance of TB.
