Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Allergology
Samuele E. Burastero
Immunologist by training, I carried out basic research for the first 15 years of my career, mainly dealing with humoral responses in systemic autoimmunity (fine specificity of antibodies against self-antigens produced by different B lymphocyte subsets and their role pathogenic role) and during HIV infection (characterization of antibodies to self-antigens in HIV-exposed, uninfected subjects). Subsequently, I started clinical activities in allergology for up to 20% of my working time side by side with research projects focusing on the immunological mechanisms of the inflammatory response in the airways of allergic asthmatic patients (characterization of T lymphocytes egressing to the lower respiratory trait during allergen exposure). In recent years I have combined these interests with the study of the immunogenicity of the main allergens (spreading of T and B lymphocyte response in the natural history of respiratory allergies and in the course of allergen specific immunotherapy)
