March 14th, 2025

Amidst the intensive biomedical presentations at San Raffaele's Annual Retreat, we maintain the time-honored tradition of holding a 'Science and Society' talk, offering a refreshing perspective. This year, we were delighted to host Prof. Guido Tonelli, from CERN, who enlightened us with his presentation on “Contemporary Science and the New Vision of the Universe.”

Guido Tonelli graduated in Physics in 1975 from the University of Pisa and in 1992 he was appointed as Associate Professor at the University of Sassari. In 1996, he started working at the University of Pisa, where he became Full Professor in General Physics in 1999.

His main interests cover particle physics, cosmology and quantum mechanics. Professor Tonelli is also a science communicator and has published several books that tackle fascinating topics in Physics. Tonelli is known for being the spokesperson for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment held at CERN, which, together with the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) project, led to the discovery of the Higgs boson, announced on July 4, 2012

We are deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to attend Prof. Tonelli’s lecture. During his visit at our annual retreat, our colleagues at UniSR had the chance to speak with him to gain some additional perspective about his life’s work.
