Eye repair lab
The research focus of the Eye Repair Lab is represented by the molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling inflammation in highly prevalent ocular surface disorders (such as: keratitis, conjunctivitis, ocular surface burns, etc.). Our lab was the first to identify neuroinflammation as a key contributor to the onset and maintenance of neovascularization, pain and inflammation in corneal diseases.
We are trying to better understand the role of corneal nerves in maintaining ocular surface integrity. We are also interested in understanding how interaction of the nervous and immune systems regulates the ocular pain response, and how this can be approached therapeutically.
Our approach is primarily translational, with continuous cross-fertilization from the clinic to the lab and vice versa. Our final aim is to apply knowledge generated to improve understanding, and eventually treatment, of disabling, poorly treated ocular disorders.
