doing science, telling science
IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele has always been committed to share its research activity to a broad audience and it is a recognized leader in life science communication and education not only in the Milan area, but on a national level. The institute truly believe that communicating research activities, projects and culture — filling as much as possible the gap between science and society, for the benefit of both — is a fundamental duty.
Due to the ever-increasing social, economic and environmental implication of their research, scientists should be directly engaged in communicating their work whenever it's possible. That's why our Outreach and Science Communication Office collaborates with university professors, senior researchers, as well as many PhD students and Postdoc fellows, to deliver a variety of activities designed for different publics and contexts.
Only by having children as a privileged audience for science communication we can change the way society looks at science in the long term: young boys and girls are enthusiastic, open to new experiences and they show a striking capacity for addressing complex issues using critical thinking and creativity.
For schools participating in educational activities organized by Ospedale San Raffaele is a unique opportunity to reach out to an international community of researchers and to explore the forefront of biomedical science.

As the publics are varied, even the media and places where science communication is carried out are very different in nature. In some cases, the locations are explicitly dedicated to this task, as in the case of schools. In others, science communication can be done through unusual actors and methods, in unexpected locations such as theatre and pubs.
During the years, IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele participated in many outreach events in Milan, becoming a leading player in science communication and education in the city area, with an overall goal of heightening audience enthusiasm for biomedical research and scientific culture. Among these events there is the European Researchers' Night in Milano (MEETmeTONIGHT), il Festival della Scienza in Genova, Pint of Science and BergamoScienza (of which is a founding partner).
